Active Voice: They have taken it.
Passive Voice: It has been taken by them.
( Here 'has' is used for the subject 'it' 3rd person singular number.)
Direct Speech: He said to me, "I am ill."
Indirect Speech: He told me that he was ill.
(As 'I' is a 1st person, it is changed to 'he' according to the rule of narration)
Sentence Problem: He speaks as if he (to be) mad.
Sentence Solution: He speaks as if he were mad.
(Here 'were' is used in case of any person )
