Article is a very important item in English grammar. It will help students write correct sentences. Actually learning article is very easy for the learners.

Generally ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’ are regarded as article.

Consonant=All letters except vowel.

Use of the article ‘A’

*       Normally article ‘a’ is used before a consonant.

For example: He is a very good boy.

(Here ‘v’ is consonant and so before this consonant, article ‘a’ has been used.)

*       Article ‘a’ is used before a word with ‘one’.

For example: It is a one taka note.

(Here there is a compound word with ‘one’ and so before this one; article ‘a’ has been used.)

*       Article ‘a’ is used before initially ‘U’ pronounced word.

For example: Selim Reza is a university student.  

(Here there is the initially ‘U’ pronounced word and so before this one; article ‘a’ has been used.)

*       In case of abbreviation, article ‘a’ is used before initially consonant pronounced word.

For example: He is a BA. He has a Ph.D.  She is a BCS candidate in this year.

(Here there are the initially consonant pronounced words and so before them; article ‘a’ has been used.)

*       Article ‘a’ is used in case of some phrases.

For example: She is in a fix what to do. She is at a loss what to do. They came here in a body.

(Here ‘in a fix’, at a loss’ and ‘in a body’ are phrases and in case of them; fixed article ‘a’ has been used.)

Use of the article ‘An’

*       Normally article ‘an’ is used before a vowel.

For example: It is an umbrella and we use it to protect ourselves from sun or rain. Here ‘u’ is vowel and so before this vowel, article ‘an’ has been used.

*       Article ‘an’ is used before initially vowel pronounced word.

For example: Kiron is an honest person.

(Here there is the initially vowel pronounced word and so before this one; article ‘an’ has been used.)

*       In case of abbreviation, article ‘an’ is used before initially vowel pronounced word.

For example: He is an MBA. He is an FBBS.  She is an HSC candidate in this year.

(Here there are the initially vowel pronounced words and so before them; article ‘an’ has been used.)

*       Article ‘an’ is used in case of some phrases.

For example: They came to theatre to take an interest. The story has come to an end.

(Here ‘take an interest’ and ‘come to an end’ are phrases and in case of them; fixed article ‘an’ has been used.)

Use of the article ‘The’

*       Normally article ‘the’ is used before a consonant or vowel.

For example: This is the book that I am looking for. Here ‘b’ is consonant and before this consonant, article ‘the’ has been used according to context.

Or,

This is the office that I am looking for. Here ‘o’ is vowel and before this vowel, article ‘the’ has been used according to context.

*       In case of the name of a river, article ‘the’ is used before that river.

For example: The Padma abounds with many fishes.

(Here ‘Padma’ is a river and so before the river; article ‘the’ has been used.)

*       In case of the name of a paper, article ‘the’ is used before that paper.

For example: The Ittefaq is full of job news.

(Here ‘Ittefaq’ is a paper and so before that paper; article ‘the’ has been used.)

*       In case of the name of a holy book, article ‘the’ is used before that holy book.

For example:  I read the Quran.

(Here ‘Quran’ is a holy book and so before that holy book; article ‘the’ has been used.)

*       In case of the name of combination of islands, article ‘the’ is used before that combination of islands.

For example:  I visited the Andamans.

(Here ‘Quran’ is a holy book and so before that holy book; article ‘the’ has been used.)

Use appropriate article.

Use suitable article in the passage.

1)     

---- unit by which the loudness of sound is measured is called --- decibel. According to ---UN, the normal tolerance limit of sound is 45 decibels. When the vibration of sound is at --- tolerable, pleasant level, it is simply called sound. But when it is sharp and harsh to the ears, it becomes noise. Serious harm can be caused to people if they are regularly exposed to sounds exceeding 70 decibels. Because of --- growth of urban population and the increasing use of machines in our everyday life there has been --- general increase in the level of sound around us. On --- average, people in the cities are exposed to sounds ranging from 30 to 90 decibels or even more. --- study in Japan has found that housewives who live in the city were exposed to almost the same amount of sound that --- factory worker was exposed to at his/her workplace. --- occupations that the study found to be the noisiest were factory work, truck driving and primary school teaching. Many developed countries are trying to control sound pollution by careful town planning and developing public awareness. In Holland schools are not allowed near airports and houses which are situated near airports are provided with special types of insulation to limit --- sound heard inside the buildings. Education is ---- process by which our mind develops through formal learning at ---- institution like a school, college or university. It is mental and intellectual training which provides opportunities of growth and helps to meet challenges and overcome obstacles to progress. Again, ---- purpose of education is to enlighten the individual and develop his/her capacity to the limit. It is also ---- business of education to train individuals to make ---- right choices to go ahead. It ennobles our mind and refines our sensibility. It also broadens our outlook and helps us become aware of our rights and responsibilities. Therefore, it is often compared to light which removes ---- darkness of ignorance and helps us distinguish between right and wrong. Ex-President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania way back in 1974 said at ---- international conference that the primary purpose of education was ---- liberation of man from the restrictions of habits and attitudes which limit his humanity. He further said education should promote humanity and universal brotherhood and that it could be used as ---- catalyst for a change for ---- better.
