Modifier plays a very important role in English. It gives extra information about a part of speech in a sentence. Modifier is something what gives some extra information for a word, especially for noun. Modifier is of two kinds-
1) Pre-modifier
2)Post modifier
Pre-modifier
The modifier which is used before noun is a pre-modifier.
For example: He is an honest person. The word 'honest' is a pre-modifier.
Post modifier
The modifier which is used after noun or others is a post modifier.
For example: The girl sitting under the tree is my sister. The words 'sitting under the tree' is a post modifier.
Infinitive: To+main verb
Question:I want------- home. (Use infinitive as post modifier)
Answer:I want to go home.
Infinitive phrase: To+main verb+something
Question:I want------- home. (Use infinitive phrase as post modifier)
Answer:I want to go home regularly.
Present participle: Main verb+ing
Question: ---------home, I will take rest.
(Use present participle as post modifier)
Answer:Going home, I will take rest.
Present participle phrase: Main verb+ing+something
Question: ---------home, I will take rest.
(Use present participle phrase as post modifier)
Answer:Going home, I will take rest.
Possessive forms: my, our, your, his, her, their, its, Karim's
For example:
Question: Kabir is a very good person. ----aim is to shin in life.
(Use possessive form as pre-modifier)
Answer: Kabir is a very good person. His aim is to shin in life.
Demonstrative forms: this, these, that, those
For example:
Question: Calcium is very important in human body. ----substance is found in milk. (Use demonstrative form as pre-modifier)
Answer: Calcium is very important in human body. This substance is found in milk.
Intensifier: very, too, completely, totally
For example:
Question: Kazi Nazrul Islam is a --------- famous poet.
(Use an intensifier as pre-modifier)
Answer: Kazi Nazrul Islam is a very famous poet.
Quantifier: much, more, many, some
For example:
Question: He has eaten ------ rice just now.
(Use a quantifier as pre-modifier)
Answer: He has eaten ------ rice just now.
Write an adjective if asked to pre-modify the noun
For example:
1) She is a ------poetess.( pre-modify the noun)
Answer: good/great/famous/real
Write a noun if asked to use noun adjective to pre-modify the noun
For example:
1) Ayesha is a ------student.( use noun adjective to pre-modify the noun)
Answer: college/university
Write an adverb if asked to post modify the verb
For example:
1) She writes to her mother------.( post modify the verb)
Answer: regularly
